Do you actually plan these things or do you just start and see what happens?

I usually have a general idea of what im doing, in this case i started with rough composition, stayed very loose and kept pushing the paint around till i found the shapes i liked. Large textured brushes helped to imply detail.

"Imply" detail. Nice. Rembrandt did that all the time, so I suppose it has to be a good strategy. :) One question: do you make the textured brushes yourself, or do you use a pre-made pack?

haha cool, yep he was pretty good! I have some pre made but i nearly always find that i revert to a couple of well worn comfy home made ones. :)
